Happy Moon Festival (Mid-Autumn Festival)!

This is a very popular festival celebrated by Chinese. As full moon symbolizes unity and wholeness. On this special day, family and friends would gather, eat moon cakes, drink tea and appreciate the full moon. It’s also a tradition to carry brightly lit lanterns.

Moon Festival is strongly associated with a few Chinese legends and folk tales. If you are interested in learning more, try googling “mid-autumn festival legends”. There are quite a few fun stories to read and to tell. πŸ™‚

Tonight, Β I can’t help thinking of a classical Chinese poem by Li Bai. It’s a famous poem that almost all Chinese would know. The poem seems so effortless and yet each word is so poignant that could intoxicate someone for hours.

Especially for Chinese away from home, when we look at the moon, we think of home. The reason being the moon is an object that we can all share no matter where we are. At different places, we might look at the same moon at the same time! Β How poetic is that? We can share the sun too, but the sun would be too bright to look at, right? ^_^

Before my bed
There is bright-lit moonlight

Lifting my head
I watch the bright moon
Lowering my head
I dream that I’m home.

Siblings are Forever

“How many kids do you plan to have?”

I get asked this question a lot by my friends.

My answer? “At least two. Three would be ideal.”

“WHAAATTTT???”

I am not sure why I always get that kind of reaction when I mention the number of kids I plan to have.

Are two kids too many?

I know it’s hard to even raise a dog. πŸ™‚ To have two kids, I probably need to grow two more arms and five more legs to keep up with them.

But you know what? I am not going to live forever. I wouldn’t want my child to be alone after I am gone. If I have two kids, then at least they can keep each other companied and support each other through tough times. They have the same blood!

Siblings are forever. I have four siblings and they are my best friends. We can always count on each other. No matter how long I haven’t seen them, when I meet them, it’s like we’ve never left each other. That’s a bond that cannot be broken.

We share clothes, shoes and have no problem sharing a bed.

When anyone of them is in trouble, my heart will feel like as if it has been pierced through. It hurts so bad.

When I am with them, I am 100% myself. I can fart, bark, burp all I want. I can be so silly in front of my loved ones, and I call that happiness.

I thank my parents for giving me three wonderful sisters and a brother. My siblings are the best gifts my parents have given me. God blesses them!

It’s 9/9 and I declare today Happy Sibling Day. If you have a sibling, please give him / her a big hug! ‘cos you are so lucky to have each other. XOXOXO

Friday Morning

Jet lag kicked in last night unexpectedly and I passed out at 6pm. T_T

I am home alone with my retired mom and dad who are addicted to the stock market. It’s like their full time “job”.

As long as they are doing it for fun, not too much stress; I think it’s a good way of exercising their brains.

The worst thing is to let old people sit at home, watch tv or sleep whole day. Alzheimer’s might kick in sooner that way!

I am a little out of touch with the scenes in Kuching. So, I rely on Kuching’s FB page to give me some pointers. πŸ™‚ Thank goodness for social media.

To not upset mom, I have been eating at home mostly, but managed to tapao (pack to go) some comfort food home. πŸ™‚ I am in noodle heaven, what do you expect me to do? πŸ˜›Β  Tomato kueh teow and kampua noodles are on the top on my list.

Today, I had something that I haven’t had in a long time – otak-otak. YUM! RM1 (USD0.3) for one.

Otak-otak: sticky rice with sambal belachan wrapped in banana leaves. It's spicy!

Update: Mom just told me these are not the traditional otak-otak (made from fish meat). πŸ™ I am not sure what I bought…. but they were yummy. πŸ™‚

home, sweet home

After 41 hours of traveling, I finally reached Kuching. This has been by far the worst international traveling ever for me.Β  Four out of five flights were delayed.

But, now that I am home, it was all worth it. Home, sweet home. πŸ™‚ It’s like I’ve never left.

I took a couple sleeping pills last night, and got up at 6am this morning.Β  I’ll get to know if I’ve gotten over jet lag later today.

Where’s Kuching, you may ask?

Kuching is a ciy,Β located in Sarawak (state), East Malaysia. The neighboring coutries are Thailand, Singapore, Bruinei, Indonesia and Philipines.

Kuching

Kuching

In Malay, Kuching sounds like the word “kucing”, which means cat. So, Kuching is also known as the Cat City. You’ll find quite a few of cat statutes throughout Kuching city. πŸ™‚

Today, I am just going to chill with my parents in the morning. Then, I can’t wait to go for my haircut in the afternoon! ~my twice a year haircut. LOL. Asian hairdressers know how to take care of asian hair better, at a cheaper $ due to currency exchange. Hair mask, coloring, cut and style… would come to same price as one hair cut in Iowa City. Bye bye splitends. Muahahaha I am so excited.
